Bles-Wold Dairy ----- News from the cows!
Our triplets are now real grown ups and over 2 years of age, time to give birth to the first calf and start milk production! All 3 - Amalia, Ariane and Alexia gave birth to healthy calves and making milk for more yogurt, they are content with the other cows in the barn. Amalia and Ariane both gave birth to a female calf and Alexia had a bull calf. The calf shown is Amalia’s daughter. Our son Gerard and grandson Tone are watching the triplets.
The cows on our farm provide us with milk that we turn into farm fresh Bles-Wold yogurt. Healthy and happy cows produce the best milk! The black and white Holstein cow is famous for milk production all over the world and has served us well. In 2005, we began exploring other options on how to improve the general health of our herd. The Fleckvieh breed, hailing from the Bavaria region in Germany, is well known for milk production as well as beef production; called dual purpose. In fact, recent research indicates that the entire North American cattle population could be reduced by 30% if all dairy producers made the switch to a dual purpose breed like Fleckvieh. For more information visit www.bigbeargenetics.com The Fleckvieh has a white face and a red/brown body as seen in the image below. The milk from Fleckvieh cows is high in protein and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). In Bavaria, the farmers have been using the milk from Fleckvieh cows to make delicious cheeses and yogurt for many years. Here at Bles-Wold Dairy we started introducing Fleckvieh into the herd in 2005. Currently over half of our herd is a Holstein and Fleckvieh cross. The combination of traits and characteristics result in more durable and healthier animal.
