Bles-Wold Dairy ----- News from the cows!

Triplets!!
Most cows will give birth to one calf at a time. Twins are common, but triplets are a very rare occurrence. However, on September 21, 2009, a five year old cow named Hershel gave birth to three female calves! Most farms will never experience this as the chance for triplets of the same sex is 1 in 700,000.

We knew that the mother was very heavy and twins were expected but you can imagine our astonishment seeing the third calf being delivered! All three female calves are healthy and similar in size (35kg). The triplets took a lot of energy from the mother and she needed time to get back to her normal health and milk production. She is now fully recovered and her three calves are healthy and growing at a normal rate.

The cows on our farm provide us with milk that we turn into farm fresh Bles-Wold yogurt. Healthy and happy cows produce the best milk!

The black and white Holstein cow is famous for milk production all over the world and has served us well. In 2005, we began exploring other options on how to improve the general health of our herd. The Fleckvieh breed, hailing from the Bavaria region in Germany, is well known for milk production as well as beef production; called dual purpose. In fact, recent research indicates that the entire North American cattle population could be reduced by 30% if all dairy producers made the switch to a dual purpose breed like Fleckvieh.

The Fleckvieh has a white face and a red/brown body as seen in the image below. The milk from Fleckvieh cows is high in protein and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). In Bavaria, the farmers have been using the milk from Fleckvieh cows to make delicious cheeses and yogurt for many years.

Here at Bles-Wold Dairy we started introducing Fleckvieh into the herd in 2005. Currently over half of our herd is a Holstein and Fleckvieh cross. The combination of traits and characteristics result in more durable and healthier animal.
